Periodontology
Periodontitis (periodontitis) and gingivitis — inflammation of the tissues surrounding the tooth and holding the tooth in the hole (periodontal). The cause of occurrence is a microbial infection. As a rule, these diseases are called gum disease. In the early stages of the disease, inflammatory processes capture only the gum tissue (gingivitis), which, without treatment, gradually spread to the deep tissues holding the tooth in the jaw — the ligament of the tooth and the bone — periodontitis. Periodontitis is the main cause of tooth loss not only in old age. Often aggressive forms of periodontitis appear as early as 25-30 years.

How periodontitis is treated
Treatment is carried out in several stages by a periodontist therapist together with a surgeon. An approximate treatment regimen is as follows: a thorough dental examination, the study of a panoramic image, which best shows the loss of bone tissue, the identification of hereditary factors, bad habits and diseases that aggravate the course of gingivitis and periodontitis. During a clinical examination, the dentist determines the depth of the dentoalveolar groove, if it exceeds 3 mm - perhaps this is a reason to do a deep periodontal cleaning. If pathological tooth-gingival pockets of more than 4-5 mm are found, then this is a case for open curettage and surgical restoration of bone tissue by methods of directed tissue regeneration.
After that, a treatment plan is drawn up. We emphasize that currently there is no universal method of treatment that can get rid of this problem, so the treatment of periodontitis is multi-stage and long-term.
General treatment regimen
- Professional oral hygiene
- Closed curettage
- Оценка эффективности
- Splinting of teeth
- Open curettage with adequate antibacterial therapy
- Supportive periodontal therapy
Surgery
- Open curettage
- Patchwork operations
- Directed bone regeneration and membrane technique
- Prosthetics, restoration of missing teeth with implants
Possible complications and outcomes
In many cases, periodontitis is chronic, which means periods of exacerbation and remission. The lack of treatment inevitably leads to the loss of teeth. It has been proven that periodontitis can aggravate the course of many other diseases (cardiovascular, pulmonary, joint diseases). When performing planned treatment and regular maintenance visits, you can achieve stabilization of the process and prolong your teeth's life for a longer period, and the gums will acquire a healthy and beautiful appearance.
